BASIC PREMISE: Marieta (Cervera), a narcoleptic transsexual, struggles to pay for an operation that would get rid of her 20 centimeter penis while having a romance with a sexy stud, El Reponedor (Puyol) who doesn’t mind her remaining male organ. ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 20 Centimeters boasts a radiant, performance by Monica Cervera as Marieta, a narcoleptic transsexual who breaks into song-and-dance during her dreams. Marieta, a.k.a. Adolfo, shares an apartment with a midget, Tomas (O’Dogherty). Marieta’s panache and charisma makes her come across as a lively, likable and memorable character. Eventually, she spends more time with her new hunky boyfriend, El Reponedor. To pay for her operation to remove those 20 centimeters down below, she gets a job as a railroad station janitor. Even with a clichéd love triangle involving Tomas, Marieta and El Reponedor, 20 Centimeters feels consistently refreshing and surprising thanks to writer/director Ramón Salazar’s decision to include the lively and even humorous musical numbers as well as vibrant Technicolor visuals. Occasionally, the drama feels like a soap opera, but without a single dull moment. Fans of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Science of Sleep and Pedro Almodovar films will get a big kick out this wildly entertaining film. SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired. INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None. NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 0 IN A NUTSHELL: Vibrant, refreshing and wildly entertaining. Monica Cervera gives a radiant performance.
