The Cast: Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske, Will Forte, Ralf Moeller, Mo'Nique, Eric Christian Olsen, Jürgen Prochnow, Cloris Leachman, Donald Sutherland.
Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar.
BASIC PREMISE: Brothers Todd (Stolhanske) and Jan (Soter) form a team of beer-chugging men to compete with their cousins in the Beerfest competition in Germany.
ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: If you’re looking for silly, gross-out humor and nudity, you’ll enjoy every moment of Beerfest. The plot consists of many sight gags as Todd and Jan visit Germany to spread their grandfather’s ashes and, instead, end up competing at the Beerfest. Back in America, they line up three more players including Barry (Chandrasekhar), a man-whore, overweight food-loving Phil (Heffernan) and Steve (Lemme), a lab technician who does something to frogs that can’t be written here. Unfortunately, the German team isn’t nearly as funny as the American team. Also, Mo’Nique has poor comic timing in her few scenes. On the other hand, Cloris Leachman has a lot of fun as the dirty grandmother who loves sausages and who has a history as a whore on a cruise ship. Donald Sutherland has a hilarious cameo in the beginning. Much of the humor is shocking, disgusting and offensive, which is exactly what you should expect from Jay Chandrasekhar, who also directed Super Troopers. He keeps the comic energy high and any character development low, of course. It’s just a lot of mindless fun with a strong R rating. None of the comic surprises will be spoiled here, but just be sure to stay through the end credits for some bloopers.
SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.
INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you check your brain at the door.
NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 2
IN A NUTSHELL: Mindless, silly fun that will keep beer-lovers, especially, laughing.
