The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (PG)

Release Date: December 9th, 2005 by Walt Disney Pictures. The Cast: Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Tilda Swinton, James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent, James Cosmo, Kiran Shah and Liam Neeson (voice) Directed by Andrew Adamson.

BASIC PREMISE: Four young siblings enter the magical world of Narnia through a wardrobe and must undo an evil curse by the White Witch (Swinton).

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: The Chronicles of Narnia magically transports you into the world of Narnia with plenty of visual wonders and lots of imagination. Within the first 15 minutes, Lucy (Henley), Edmund (Keynes), Susan (Popplewell) and Peter (Moseley) stumble upon Narnia and realize that they must defeat the White Witch in order to save it from its deep, wintry freeze. What makes their adventure so much fun are the quirky, memorable creatures they meet along the way. One particularly memorable creature is a talking beaver who gives shelter to the children while the White Witch holds Edmund hostage. Meanwhile, she sends a pack of wolves to hunt down his siblings. The rest of the plot mostly involves a cat-and-mouse chase as the siblings try to avoid the White Witch. In one exciting scene, they run across a frozen lake only to find that Santa Clause and his sleigh is behind them. He provides them with useful tools during the spectacular final battle sequence. Also quite memorable is Aslan (wonderfully voiced by Neeson) who helps them fight the White Witch in the third act. Tilda Swinton is perfectly-cast as the White Witch, with her pale skin and her sharp voice. With awe-inspiring cinematography, plenty of eye candy, and an Enya-like musical score, it’s easy to recall The Lord of the Rings . However, this fantasy epic is not only shorter, but much easier to follow for little kids. By the time the four siblings come back home, you hunger for more fun adventures with them in Narnia.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None.
