BASIC PREMISE: While guarding the grave of rock star Colin Fitz overnight, two security guards, Paul (McGrath) and Grady (Fowle), bond with a variety of fans.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Colin Fitz Lives! has plenty of situational humor, dark, offbeat dialogue and very quirky characters. It’s a clear example that hilarity can still ensue with a low budget given such a sharply-written dialogue and a great cast of comedic actors. William H. Macy plays Mr. O’Day, a supervisor who sends two security guards to protect the grave of a dead rock star, Colin Fitz. Throughout the course of one night, the security guards exchange wildly funny banter ranging from hernias to John Lennon to jelly sandwiches. They also deal with some strange visitors who come to show their respect. Ann (Plimpton), one of the frequent visitors, develops a crush on Paul and tries to have sex with him right in the cemetery. In a particularly hilarious scene, Mr.O’Day checks up on the security guards just when Grady happens to be naked while drying his clothes on a tree branch after his wife (McCormack) sprays him with a hose. Paul has his shirt untucked, so Mr.O’Day gets the wrong idea. Screenwriter Tom Morrissey wisely includes mockumentary-style footage of crazy fans explaining what they love about Colin Fitz. One fan claims that he got laid for the first time just because he played a Colin Fitz song while the girl was with him. Thanks to director Robert Bella, this refreshing, wildly entertaining film has just the right balance between absurdity and hilarity without ever taking itself too seriously.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you check your brain at the door.
