In Russian with subtitles.

BASIC PREMISE: When the leader of the Dark Others, Zavulon (Verzhbitskiy), kidnaps Anton’s son, Yegor (Martynov), Anton (Khabensky) must find the Chalk of Fate to save Yegor.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Those who loved the wildly imaginative plot and stunning visuals from Night Watch will be just as thoroughly entertained by its sequel, Day Watch. The opening scenes remind you that the Dark Other and the Light Others have been at peace together while the Night Watch keeps an eye out for any breaches in the truce by policing the Dark Others. Chaos ensues when Zavulon, the Dark Others’ leader, kidnaps a young boy named Yegor in hopes of starting another war with the Light Others. Yegor’s father, Anton, joins forces with a new Night Watch member, the sexy Svetlana (Poroshina), in a mission to get back his son. He also tries to find the Chalk of Fate, which has special powers that changes the past. One of the most thrilling and absurdly comic scenes is when Sventlana literally drives on a side of a building and zooming through its hallways. Also, the subtitles have their own special effects when they change color and other nifty changes depending on who’s speaking and how they speak. More offbeat humor would have helped to contrast the twist, serious plot. Fortunately, writer/director Timur Bekmambetov knows how to move the pace along at a fast enough speed with plenty of exciting action sequences that don’t make you feel nauseous. The plot never feels too confusing or convoluted, although it does have its fair share of mind-boggling moments. Just as expected, Bekmambetov includes eye-popping visuals which look absolutely dazzling, especially on the big screen.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you suspend your disbelief.

NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 0
