Release Date: August 5th, 2005 by Warner Brothers Pictures.
The Cast: Johnny Knoxville, Seann William Scott, Jessica Simpson, Willie Nelson, Burt Reynolds
Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar.
BASIC PREMISE: Three cousins (Knoxville, Scott, and Simpson) try to stop the evil, greedy plot of a commissioner (Reynolds) who wants to destroy their family farm and take over the town’s property with his coal mines.
ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Despite a silly plot and offensive humor, this movie entertains simply by the energy and appeal of its cast. Although Simpson gives a bad performance as Daisy Duke, she steals the show just with her sexy looks in skimpy clothes. Knoxville and Scott are very goofy together as Luke and Bo Duke. Their comic energy is almost contagious. Willie Nelson is particularly funny and delivers some memorable lines. He does not appear often enough. The Dukes are not likeable and are annoying at times. The many exciting car chases are like a roller-coaster ride full of adrenaline—especially when their car flies through the air and miraculously lands safely on a highway. The plot has no suspense or tension—the cousins never appear to be in any real danger. There are so many stereotypes, some of which are offensive but they are still fun to watch. For example, the mayor has a wild side with drugs and one of the sheriffs is easily hypnotized by Jessica Simpson—and, fortunately, so is every other guy in the audience.
SPIRITUAL VALUE: There is absolutely nothing to think about or learn from, but it is not expected, either.
INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you check your brain at the door.
