Directed by Bill Plympton.
BASIC PREMISE: When Rod (voice of Mulroney), a high school jock, in a jealous rage, kills Cherri (voice of Silverman), a cheerleader, and her slave, Spud (voice of Gilliland), Cherri and Spud come back from the dead to exact revenge on him.
ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Set in the 1950’s with whacky, stylized hairdos, this 2D animated mind trip never ceases to be zany, silly and macabre. The film opens when a chef (voice of David Carradine) tells a boyfriend and girlfriend the story of how Cherri and Spud met. Spud, the new kid in town, picks on Rod (a stereotypical jock’s name) and Cherri, so he must become Cherri’s slave despite that she dislikes him. Soon enough, Spud and Cherri warm up to each other and go to the senior prom together—which angers Rod, of course. As the plot progresses, the animation gets crazier and darker with a few hilariously bizarre scenes—i.e. a kiss between Cherri and Spud. The revenge sequence in the third act is relentlessly sick, gory and twisted but still immensely entertaining and lively. The characters are all stereotyped, but they have plenty of panache and energy. Writer/director/animator clearly has a wild imagination and lets it loose in every single frame—which takes a lot of guts (no pun intended).
SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.
INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you suspend your disbelief.
