Hatchet (R)

Release Date: September 7th, 2007 (AMC Empire 25) by Anchor Bay Entertainment.
The Cast: Joel David Moore, Tamara Feldman, Deon Richmond, Kane Hodder, Parry Shen, Mercedes Mcnab.
Directed by Adam Green.

BASIC PREMISE: A group of young tourists go on a New Orleans swamp tour, where a deformed madman, Victor Crowley (Hodder), hunts them down.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Hatchet has everything that avid horror fan expects from the genre: creepy settings, stupid victims, nudity, cameos and lots and lots of gore. The plot wastes no time cutting-to-the-chase as a deformed madman, Victor Crowley, who looks more like a creature than a human, preys on his first innocent victim in a New Orleans swamp. A group of friends have fun in Marti Gras and decide to go on a swamp tour even though they’re warned about the haunted swamp. They join the tour with two hot girls who love flashing their breasts. Of course, the boat they ride on breaks down and, what follows, is a relentlessly intense chase between Victor Crowley and these young potential victims. It’s fun to try to figure out who will be Victor’s next victim and what their sick, bloody death will be like. Writer/director Adam Green delivers the goods by mixing the plenty of scares (and fake scares) with well-needed tongue-in-cheek humor. Most importantly, the handmade gore looks impressively real and disgusting while the setting in the foggy swamp area at night adds to the frightening atmosphere. If you’re a fan of Cabin Fever and, especially, Friday the 13th, you’ll immensely get a kick out of Hatchet from start to finish. Keep a look out for cameos by Robert Englund and Tony Todd, two horror film veterans.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you suspend your disbelief and check your brain at the door.

NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 0

IN A NUTSHELL: A relentlessly macabre, tongue-in-cheek homage to 80’s horror films with plenty of sick and twisted fun. Finally, there comes a horror film that delivers all the goods.

RECOMMENDED WAY TO WATCH: Movie Theater.
