The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (PG)

Release Date: April 29th, by Touchtone Pictures.
The Cast: Martin Freeman, Mos Def, Sam Rockwell,Zooey Deschanel, Bill Nighy, Anna Chancellor, Alan Rickman, Helen Mirren, Stephen Fry, John Malkovich

Basic Premise: A man goes through a wild adventure when he hitches a ride from an alien after the earth is completely destroyed.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: The ensemble cast is superb, from Alan Rickman as the voice of a depressed robot to Martin Freeman with his great comic timing as the last man to survive. Zooey Deschanel plays the last woman to survive and she is gorgeous and charismatic. Also noteworthy are the cameos by Bill Nighy, who's always a scene-stealer and John Malkovich. Each scene has very off-beat and tasteful humor, especially the first scene which is hilarious and imaginative. Each specie of aliens look and behave uniquely and believable. The state-of-the-art special effects are amazing and awe-inspiring.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: Despite its PG rating, there are a few heavy messages, such as the meaning of life and love and the monstrous greediness of bureaucrats. The first scene with the dolphins is full of wisdom and wit, as well as a very memorable scene with a falling whale. Fortunately, the earth is destructed in the beginning, so it doesn't become a depressing or difficult movie--in fact, most of it is light-spirited and ultimately uplifting.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None.

NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 0
