Release Date: March 31st, 2006 by Twentieth Century Fox.
The Voices: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Dennis Leary, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck, Queen Latifah, Will Arnett, Jay Leno, Chris Wedge.
Directed by Carlos Saldanha.
BASIC PREMISE: Sid (Leguizamo), Manny (Romano), and Diego (Leary) evacuate from their valley as the threat of flood from melting ice lingers.
ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: This sequel to Ice Age brings the lovable characters back, but lacks much of the humor and inventive plot. As usual, Scrat the “nutty” squirrel bring the biggest laughs in his separate scenes. Manny, the wooly mammoth, Sid the sloth and Diego the tiger have little to do other than escape their frozen (but melting) territory. Manny meets Ellie (Latifah), a mammoth who is convinced she’s a possum. Along with her come two possums, Eddie (Scott) and Crash (Peck). That’s when the plot gets slightly more interesting, especially as Manny and Ellie flirt with one another. Sid does have a briefly hilarious scene when he encounters a large tribe of sloth treat him like king by collectively mimicking his moves. Unfortunately, some scenes tend to drag without any humor, wit, or plot development. More action sequences would have definitely helped to add at least some momentum to the plot. On a positive note, the CGI effects are very impressive, especially with the Ray Tracing effects on Manny’s fur which gives it a realistic shine and even the impression of texture. Likewise, the water shines and flows like real water does. If only more effort were put into writing a funnier, more inventive script, this sequel wouldn't be a few steps down from the first film.
SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.
INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: Slim plot and not enough of Scrat.
NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 2
IN A NUTSHELL: Superb CGI animation and lovable characters, but a weak plot and simply not enough humor.
RECOMMENDED WAY TO WATCH: Movie Theater (2nd Run) or a Matinee.
