Release Date: May 6th (NYC-AMC Empire 25 and Angelika Film Center), by MGM. The Cast: Martin Short, Jan Hooks, Elizabeth Perkins, Janeane Garofalo BASIC PREMISE: A talk show host (Short) visits the Toronto Film Festival and gets caught up in the murder of an actress (Perkins). ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: This is one hilarious film with many jokes about Hollywood actors--especially David Lynch who is impersonated quiet well. A lot of the humor is situational but the well-written interviews with celebrities, such as Steve Martin, are what really make this film funny. The plot itself is silly and outrageous, but it is done with a lot of comic energy thanks to Martin Short's perfect comic timing--and good make-up/costume design--as Jiminy Glick. Everyone has fun in this movie, including the audience. Be sure to stay for the laugh-out-loud outtakes. SPIRITUAL VALUE: There's really not much insight or messages, but nor does one expect or require any. INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: The plot is crazy and improbable. NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 2 THE BOTTOM LINE: A hilarious, laugh-out-loud movie thanks to Martin Short's comic timing and a lot of high comic energy. It's forgettable, but it is still a lot of fun as long as you don't take anything too seriously.
