Just Friends (PG-13)

Release Date: November 23rd, 2005 by New Line Cinema.
The Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris, Chris Klein, Amy Smart, Chris Marquette, Julie Hagerty.
Directed by Roger Krumble.

BASIC PREMISE: After becoming a successful rock star manager in LA and losing a lot of weight, Chris (Reynolds) reunites with Jamie (Smart), his high school sweetheart while trapped in NJ with a singer (Faris).

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Your enjoyment of Just Friends depends on how much you can stand Ryan Reynolds, who uses the same facial expressions and coming timing in Waiting… and Van Wilder . As the overweight Chris, he seems sweet and charming, but, ten years later and a hundred pounds lighter, he’s simply rude, obnoxious and very unlikable. However, Reynolds tries his best to make him funny and, overall, succeeds. He’s funniest when moving his lips to the song “I Swear”. Most of the time, the slapstick and goofy humor never becomes too disgusting, except for a scene with a spitball. Anna Faris plays a hyperactive, super-horny famous singer who tags along with Chris but ends up spending most with his younger brother (Marquette). In one awkward scene, she fills her mouth with toothpaste and drools all over the place. That’s definitely not what you’d expect from a famous singer. When Chris can’t find the guts to make the move on her, Jamie focuses her attention more on Dusty (Klein), who also happens to be from her high school. Once he enters the picture, not surprisingly, Chris tries to win Jamie over by competing—and fighting—with Dusty. Meanwhile, he gets advice from his dentist. This clichéd, predictable and outrageous plot at least manages to hold your attention thanks to the casts’ consistent comic energy. Be sure to stay through the end credits for more goofy scenes.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you suspend your disbelief.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Goofy, silly, outrageous but always fun! The energetic cast makes it worth your while, depending on how much you can stand Ryan Reynolds.
