Layer Cake (R)

Release Date: May 13th (NYC-AMC Empire 25,Loews 68th & B'way, City Cinemas 1,2,3, and Landmark Sunshine) by Sony Pictures Classics.
The Cast: Daniel Craig,Sienna Miller,Colm Meaney,Michael Gambon

BASIC PREMISE: A drug dealer (Craig) who wants to retire ends up being lured by a beautiful woman into a violent drug ring.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: The best part of this movie is the stellar performance by Daniel Craig. He boasts a lot of pizzazz and sinks into his role very comfortably--he is definitely a rising star. Colm Meaney and Michael Gambon are also good actors and Sienna Miller is very beautiful. The movie is shot with a lot of style and fast pacing--it almost feels like a music video at times. The soundtrack also fits into the theme as well. There are a few violent scenes that will make people cringe, but that's what is expected from a gangster film. The cockney accents are hard to understand at times--especially Meaney's accent. Also, the plot is not particularly original but it does have its small surprises, such as the ending.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: There aren't any messages that stand-out in this film, except that you should be careful who you trust. Also, the ending can be quite depressing for some people, but to some degree it is a necessary one and makes you think.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: The plot feels redundant and unoriginal at times.

NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 2

THE BOTTOM LINE: A stylish and violent British gangster movie with very good acting by Daniel Craig, but it suffers from a stale plot.

RECOMMENDED WAY TO WATCH: Movie Theater (2nd Run)
