The "L" Menu
The Cast: Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore, Robert Duvall, Horatio Sanz, Debra Messing, Robert Downey Jr., Charles Martin Smith. Directed by Curtis Hanson. BASIC PREMISE: Huck Cheever (Bana) competes against his father, L.C. (Duvall), in a Las Vegas poker tournament while romancing Billie Offer (Barrymore). ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Lucky You has most of its tension during the poker game scenes, so anyone unfamiliar with the rules of the game will feel very bored and confused. Eric Bana plays Huck Cheever, a compulsive gambler who has a knack for player poker, but not as lucky as his father who won the World Series of poker twice already. Now is Huck’s chance to prove that he can defeat his father along with many other poker players in a Las Vegas tournament. Co-writer/director Curtis Hanson should have played-up the tension between Huck and his father, but, instead, includes many seemingly unending scenes of poker games. The subplot involving his new girlfriend, Billie, doesn’t have much of a purpose and feels dull, especially given that Huck and Billie have no romantic chemistry together. There’s very little background information about Huck other than his obvious gambling problem. Where did his problem start? What was he like as a child? These and other questions arise without any answers that would have helped you to get inside Huck’s head. Therefore, it’s difficult for you to care about whether Huck wins or loses the poker tournament. If only there were some comic relief to enliven the plot up, but, unfortunately, it remains consistently insipid and tedious. SPIRITUAL VALUE: Unfortunately, none.
