Mindhunters (R)

Release Date: May 13th by Dimension Films.
The Cast: LL Cool J, Christian Slater, Jonny Lee Miller, Kathryn Morris, Val Kilmer

BASIC PREMISE: A group of FBI profilers are sent to a remote island for a simulated serial killer hunt that turns all too real.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Throughout most of this movie, there is a lot of suspense as to who is the real killer. A lot of surprisingly violent events occur--it is always fun to guess what the next violent event is, just like in the movie Final Destination. The acting is mediocre, but the real pleasures here are the scares—especially when the FBI group suspects that somebody within the group must be the killer. The music helps to build the suspense and the cinematography as well as the settings are surprisingly effective--99% of the movie is set at night. There are a lot of scenes with graphic violence, which makes this movie well worth the R-rating. The only problem is the last 15 minutes, which are contrived as the blame game of who the killer is goes back and forth too many times.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: There is a lot to think about during most of this film because the violent events are very detailed and the FBI profilers are smart. Everyone has their own idea as to who the killer is based on assumption, but this movie is full of smart surprises and twists. Unfortunately, the only way that you can guess the ending is if you're lucky rather than smart.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: The answer to the question of who is the killer does not fit into the rest of the movie neatly.

NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 2

THE BOTTOM LINE: A fun, violent, smart thriller with a lot of suspense. Even though the ending is a let-down, it was worth the wild, mind-bending ride.

RECOMMENDED WAY TO WATCH: Movie Theater (1st Run)
