MONSTER-IN-LAW (Rated PG-13) Release Date: May 13th, 2005 by New Line Cinema.
The Cast: Jennifer Lopez,Jane Fonda,Michael Vartan,Wanda Sykes
BR> BASIC PREMISE: Before a young woman (Lopez) can marry the love of her life (Vartan), she must get passed his crazy mother (Fonda).
ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: There are many funny scenes throughout this film. Some of them are laugh-out-loud, while others just make you giggle. But the real pleasure is watching Lopez and Fonda's characters battle it out in their own juvenile ways. They both look great and are full of energy, even Fonda who is almost 70. Fonda looks marvelous and her comeback after 15 years is very welcome. When it comes to comic timing, Wanda Sykes as Fonda's live-in assistant takes the cake. She is definitely a rising star to watch. Michael Vartan isn't given much to do and doesn't stand out at all--nor does he have to as soon the women take the lead. The plot is too cheesy at times, but it is always fun and refreshing.
SPIRITUAL VALUE: There aren't any significant messages in this other than having patience and compassion for other people, even if you may not like them at first. At first glance, Lopez and Fonda are unlikable because of their actions toward one another--Lopez tries to poison her at one point. However, this hilarious movie is not meant to be taken seriously.
INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: The plot is predictable and too cute at times.
