The heartbreaking doc Eating Happiness raises awareness about the horrors of the dog meat trade in Asia where some countries, i.e. China, consider the selling of dog meat to be legal. Director Genlin bravely travels to China, Thailand, South Korea and Vietnam to document the process of how dogs are killed, sold and then consumed in restaurant. The way that they're killed is inhumane and cruel. Unless you're made out of stone, you will feel disgusted when you learn how dogs, many of them stolen pets, endure so much torture before their death. Genlin doesn't shy away from showing you the images of dog parts being collected for selling purposes. The power of those images are louder than words, although Genlin does interview activists, one of whom rescues and takes care of dogs. Eating Happiness also includes interviews with individuals on the other side of the issue: the dog meat sellers, and a businessman who has developed many products derived from dog parts. All of those interviews together make for a fair and balanced call to action that sheds light on a rarely-documented animal rights issue. Prepare to be enraged, shocked and horrified. It opens at Cinema Village.
