One Missed Call (R)

Release Date: April 22nd (NYC-Cinema Village)
The Cast: Kou Shibasaki, Shin'ichi Tsutsumi, Kazue Fukiishi, Renji Ishibashi

Basic Premise: A few people are haunted by a call on their cell-phone. The problem is that the call is from them in the future and it shows their violent deaths.

Entertainment Value: There are a few decent scares in this Ring-like film. The sounds and visuals heighten the fear factor. However, the plot eventually becomes too complicated and unoriginal to become engaging. In fact, there is a long, dark haired scary-looking ghost/girl just like in The Ring and The Grudge. By the end, so many characters die that it is hard to care enough about them before they die. The violent scenes are very gory and disgusting. If you are into gore, watch for a scene near the end which is exceptionally disgusting. There is not enough bizarrely original or funny scenes to make this movie stand out in any way.

Spiritual Value: None is expected nor desired, even though there is a failed attempt for drama near the end of the film.

Insult to your intelligence: A premise that unoriginal and characters get killed too quickly.

Number of times I checked my watch: 3

The Bottom Line: An occasionally scary movie with very good visuals and sound along with a twist ending. However, besides the ending, there are no real surprises that put this movie above any other scary movie.

Recommended Way to Watch: Movie Theater (2nd Run)
