Poseidon (PG-13)

Release Date: May 12th, 2006 by Warner Brothers Pictures.
The Cast: Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, Richard Dreyfuss, Mía Maestro, Kevin Dillon, Jacinda Barrett, Jimmy Bennett, Mike Vogel, Andre Braugher, Kelly McNair.
Directed by Wolfgang Petersen.

BASIC PREMISE: When a luxury cruise line overturns after a huge rogue wave, a group of survivors must escape the ship before it’s too late.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: As an action film, Poseidon succeeds to entertain with intense action scenes and plenty of special effects. The survivors include Robert (Russell), his daughter Jennifer (Rossum), her boyfriend Christian (Vogel), Dylan (Lucas), Maggie (Barrett), Elena (Maestro), and Richard (Dreyfuss). None of these characters are particularly memorable or likeable and Kurt Russell seems to be the only actor feeling comfortable with his role. The first act sets up the beautiful interior of the ship as its passengers and crew celebrate the New Year. Within the first fifteen minutes into the plot, the Poseidon cruise line already gets hit by a tidal rogue wave which flips the ship over. For its lengthy second act, the survivors come together and desperately try to find a way out before the ship completely sinks. Fortunately, the action never stops as they all find themselves stuck in perilous situations with very little time left. Although the stilted script has a few unintentionally funny bits of dialogue, the production values more than make up for it. Director Wolfgang Peterson includes dazzling cinematography and intricate set-designs along with a pulsating musical score. If only the characters were as lively and engaging, but, after all, this is nothing but a mindlessly entertaining remake.

SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you check your brain at the door.

NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 1

IN A NUTSHELL: A weak script, but with plenty of intense action sequences and dazzling special effects. A mindlessly entertaining blockbuster!
