BASIC PREMISE: Cindy (Faris) must figure out why a creepy young ghost haunts her and save the world from an alien invasion.
ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: This time around, Scary Movie 4 parodies movie such as War of the Worlds, Saw I and II, The Grudge, The Village, Million Dollar Babyand Brokeback Mountain. Since when are Brokeback Mountain and Million Dollar Baby considered scary? Nevermind—at least the parody scenes are funny. Highlights include Leslie Nielson playing the President of the United States who cares more about the ending of a duck story than about an alien invasion—he replies that millions of people will die for sure, but the duck still stands a chance. You’ll never guess what he says during a speech at the United Nations. Screenwriters Craig Mazin and Jim Abrahams also include pop cultural references, such as when Tom Ryan (Bierko) confesses his newfound love on Oprah and a Michael Jackson-look-a-like tries to bring young boys into “safety” during a war with aliens. Just like the previous Scary Movie films, the plot feels like one gag after another without ever taking itself seriously. Sometimes, the gags involve low-brow toilet humor which gets slightly too outrageous. However, there’s no denying how much comic energy the cast has onscreen and how much fun it is to look for all of the silly gags.
SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.
INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you check your brain at the door.
