The "S" Menu
Release Date: November 3rd, 2006 (Quad Cinema) by Strand Releasing. The Cast: Trine Dyrholm, David Dencik, Frank Thiel, Elsebeth Steentoft, Jakob Ulrik Lohmann, Claes Bang. Directed by Pernille Fischer Christensen. In Danish with subtitles. BASIC PREMISE: Charlotte (Dyrholm) has an unlikely romance with her preoperative transsexual neighbor, Veronica (Dencik). ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: A Soap has an intriguing premise, but not enough character development and surprises to be truly engaging. Trine Dyrholm stars as Charlotte, a woman who breaks up with her abusive boyfriend, Kristian (Thiel), and moves into an apartment right above Veronica, a preoperative transsexual once known as Ulrik. Both Veronica and Charlotte help each other in some way: Charlotte saves Veronica from dying of a drug overdose while taking care of his cute dog and, soon enough, Ulrik breaks up a fight between her and Kristian. What follows is a mildly amusing but mostly contrived and redundant plot separated into episodes. Will Kristian return to try to win Charlotte back? Will Charlotte chose Veronica over him? Unfortunately, the screenplay co-written by Pernille Fischer Christensen and Kim Fupz Aakeson doesn’t develop any of its characters enough for you to truly care about the answers to those questions, despite decent performances by Trine Dyrholm and David Dencik as Charlotte and Veronica. Occasional remarks by a narrator who introduces the episodes as well as the cute pizza-eating dog adds some liveliness to the by-the-numbers, contrived plot, but only enough to make this a mildly engaging film. SPIRITUAL VALUE: Unfortunately, none. INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: Not enough character development and somewhat contrived. NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 3 IN A NUTSHELL: Mildly entertaining with decent performances, but suffers from a slightly contrived, unsurprising plot and not enough character development.
