BASIC PREMISE: Tomás (Cacho) secretly alternates between two different women in his apartment building while one of them, Sylvia (Liubomirova), a nurse, intentionally misdiagnoses him with AIDS.
ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: This hilarious sex comedy has a silly premise that gets more hilarious as the Tomás’ situation gets more complicated. Over the course of one night, he sleeps with Sylvia,a sexy nurse, and then escapes through the window to his neighbor’s vacant apartment where his boss (Gold) puts the moves on him. On the way to his neighbor, he spies on a beautiful, young flight attendant (Ramírez) sleeps with her pilot. When Sylvia learns about his other lover, she punishes him by misdiagnosing him with AIDS. What makes this film so enjoyable is the delightful script by writer/director Alfonso Cuarón blends a wide variety of comedy from slapstick to sexual innuendo to dark humor involving attempted suicide. Moreover, all of the livelyactors seem to be having a lot of fun with their roles and it certainly shows with their abundant energy and charisma. Many scenes will either make you smile or laugh even at small details such as Japanese tourists who continuously snap photographs everywhere they go. There are some contrived scenes with plot-holes and one-dimensional characters that belong in a sit-com. However, fortunately not a single scene drags and you’ll be thoroughly entertained from start to finish.
SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.
INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you check your brain at the door.
