Surviving Eden (Unrated)

Release Date: August 25th, 2006 (Village East Cinemas) by Good Films Releasing.
The Cast: Michael Panes, Cheri Oteri, Jane Lynch, Sam Robards, Savannah Haske, Peter Dinklage, John Landis.
Directed by Greg Pritikin.

BASIC PREMISE: A mockumentary about Dennis (Panes), an overweight clerk, rises to fame when he wins a Survivor-like reality show.

ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Surviving Eden is refreshing and outrageously funny thanks its talented cast and its smart, witty script. Michael Panes, in a hilarious fat suit, plays Dennis, a dorky, shy and overweight clerk who gets chosen to compete in a Survivor-like reality show after his best friend, Sterno (Dinklage) secretly sends in a tape of him. Soon enough, Dennis says good-bye to his mother (and his pet pig) and heads for Los Angeles where he meets a variety of quirky contestants. The contestants range from a rebellious nun, Sister Agnes (Haske) to a hyper canine euthanasia technician, Maria, played by Cheri Oteri who has a few memorable lines. When Dennis becomes famous, both of them compete for his attention—i.e. Maria pretends to be pregnant with his baby. Jane Lynch is nothing short of hilarious as the show’s producer who happens to also be a cocaine addict. Most of the film feels like a long SNL skit as if it were directed by Christopher Guest. Everyone in the cast has a lot of fun with their roles and it certainly shows. Even John Landis in a small role as a therapist is fun to watch. Director/co-writer Greg Pritikin does a great job of keeping the laughs coming at a quick pace with the witty script that satirizes the absurdity of reality TV shows. Therefore, you never take any of the scenes too seriously and just feel entertained by a delightful, talented cast from start to finish. SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.

INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you suspend your disbelief.

IN A NUTSHELL: A slice of comic heaven! An outrageously funny satire. It’ll leave you in stitches.
