The Cast: Jack Black, Kyle Gass, Jason Reed, Tim Robbins, Ben Stiller, Colin Hanks, Meat Loaf, Amy Poehler, Paul F. Tompkins, Ronnie James Dio.
Directed by Liam Lynch.
BASIC PREMISE: JB (Black) and KG (Gass) form the rock band Tenacious D and try to steal a magical guitar pick.
ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: The hilarious opening scenes introduce the history of Tenacious D from JB’s childhood until he meets KG plucking his guitar at a boardwalk and, soon enough, they form a rock band. JB has “Tenac” as a birthmark on his buttocks and KG happens to have an “ious D” birthmark, which, together forms “Tenacious D.” It’s pretty much downhill from there as the rest of the film unsuccessfully combines humor reminiscent of Beavis and Butthead and any Cheech & Chong movie. Screenwriters Jack Black, Kyle Gass and Liam Lynch infuse plenty of bizarre subplots such as involving horny sorority girls who seduce KG. The most engaging scene is when JB hallucinates a very wild and colorful dream after eating some mushrooms. Brief cameos by Tim Robbins and Ben Stiller barely add any well-needed humor—if only Will Ferrell showed up to save the jokes from falling completely flat. Jack Black does try his best to elevate the material, though, with his energetic performance, although his wide-eyed glances and hyper behavior gets old pretty fast. Ultimately, if you’re an avid fan of Tenacious D, you’ll be able to appreciate this movie more and forgive it for its silly plot. Everyone else will feel bored.
SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired.
INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you suspend your disbelief.
NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 6
IN A NUTSHELL: Wild, outrageous, but too stupid, silly and unfunny. Purely for Tenacious D fans.
