The "U" Menu
Release Date: March 3rd, 2006 by Screen Gems. The Cast: Milla Jovovich, Cameron Bright, Nick Chinlund, William Fichtner, Sebastien Andrieu, Ida Martin. Directed by Kurt Wimmer. BASIC PREMISE: Violet (Jovovich) fights to her race of Hemophages from being wiped-out by a deadly virus contained in a young boy named Six (Bright). ENTERTAINMENT VALUE:. Ultraviolet could have easily been a movie without dialogue because anything the characters say is no more than a sentence long and serve absolutely no purpose other than to state the obvious. For example, a few of the laughable lines include “I’m going to kill you!” and “You got hemoglobin on me!”. Cameron Bright, who also appears in Running Scared and Birth , has very little dialogue other than a few lines in the third act. Overall, the performances seem like the kind you would find in a B-movie with actors who have no experience in the acting world whatsoever. For example, the villain, played by Nick Chinlund, delivers his lines as if they were part of a comedy routine. Most of the movie consists of non-stop action sequences which seem like they’re straight out of a video game. The stylized, glossy visuals do give a unique, yet bizarre look which sucks all of the reality out, as if the script doesn’t do that already. For those of you looking for eye-popping CGI special effects and brilliant martial arts sequences, unfortunately, Ultraviolet will disappoint you as well. Some of the transitions between scenes seem awkward and poorly edited. On a positive note, Milla Jovovich looks sexy in every scene, but that’s the only miniscule redeeming factor in this derivative, contrived, incoherent mess. SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired. INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: Shockingly laconic and unnecessary dialogue. NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 5 IN A NUTSHELL: Unimaginative and ultimately pointless with weak CGI effects and lame dialogue. Only big fans of Milla Jovovich will be slightly entertained. Everyone else will be ultra-bored.
