Release Date: January 20th, 2006 by Screen Gems. The Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Tony Curran, Bill Nighy, Schane Brolly, Michael Sheen, Steven Mackintosh, Scott McElroy, Brian Steele. Directed by Len Wiseman. BASIC PREMISE: Selena (Beckinsale), a vampire, and Michael (Speedman), a werewolf hybrid, continue to fight against the Lycans who want a special key that they hold. ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Underworld: Evolution feels very much like the first Underworld with non-stop action, dark, creepy settings, and plenty of special effects. Just as expected, Kate Beckinsale looks sexy in black leather even though she plays a vampire. Just looking at her will keep your eyes glued to the screen. Of course, she still needs a hunky sidekick played by buffed-up Scott Speedman. They both have to figure out why the Lycans are chasing after them. Once they figure out that it has something to do with a key, they must figure out what exactly it unlocks. It lives up to its R-rating with a few gory scenes and some nudity. Just don’t expect Beckinsale to show anything in a well-directed erotic sex scene that covers up everything remotely sexual. The fast pace along with the pulsating score helps energize all the scenes. Every fighting sequence feels exciting and thrilling with impressive CGI effects. In terms of plot and character development, there’s not much to sink your teeth into, but who really cares? If you were hooked by the first movie, you’ll be equally hooked by this thoroughly entertaining sequel. SPIRITUAL VALUE: None is required or desired. INSULT TO YOUR INTELLIGENCE: None, as long as you suspend your disbelief. NUMBER OF TIMES I CHECKED MY WATCH: 0 IN A NUTSHELL: A sequel that lives up to its predecessor. Fast-paced, action-packed with amazing special effects! Kate Beckinsale is still the sexiest vampire ever!
